Quality Control and Migos: The Label That Shaped Modern Atlanta Rap

How one Atlanta label went global. How Quality Control Music grew from a 2013 Atlanta startup into a hit factory behind Migos, Lil Yachty, Lil Baby and City Girls.

Two veterans build a home base

In March 2013, two seasoned Atlanta music men, Kevin "Coach K" Lee and Pierre "P" Thomas (often written "Pee"), launched Quality Control Music. Instead of chasing a big-label deal first, they hired their own radio and promotion staff and handled publishing and management themselves, giving the company the muscle of a major with the hustle of an independent.

They also put real money into a home base, spending about $1 million and a year of work on a headquarters on Atlanta's west side with four recording studios and offices. That building became the place where a whole generation of hits was written, recorded and polished.

Migos and the flow everyone copied

The label's first stars were Migos, a trio from Lawrenceville in Gwinnett County: Quavo, his nephew Takeoff, and Quavo's longtime friend Offset. They had been making music together since 2008, and in 2013 the Zaytoven-produced "Versace" gave them their first Hot 100 entry, helped along by a Drake remix that put them in front of a national audience.

What made Migos stand out was rhythm. Their rapid triplet cadence, three syllables packed into every beat, became so closely tied to the group that fans nicknamed it the "Migos flow". Southern rappers had used triplets before, but Migos made the pattern a signature, and soon it could be heard all over hip hop. The payoff came in January 2017, when "Bad and Boujee" with Lil Uzi Vert hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the album Culture debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Culture II also reached No. 1 in 2018, and the group earned Grammy nominations for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Performance.

Takeoff passed away in November 2022, a deep loss for Atlanta and for fans everywhere. His smooth, precise verses remain a big part of the Migos legacy.

A roster that kept growing

Quality Control proved it was more than a one-group label. Mableton native Lil Yachty arrived in 2016 with his playful Lil Boat mixtape and signed a joint venture with QC, Capitol and Motown that June. His DRAM collaboration "Broccoli" climbed to No. 5 on the Hot 100, and in 2023 he surprised everyone with Let's Start Here, a psychedelic rock album that landed on many best-of-the-year lists.

Lil Baby, raised in Atlanta's Oakland City neighborhood, became the label's next superstar. "Drip Too Hard" with Gunna reached No. 4 on the Hot 100, and his album My Turn debuted at No. 1 in 2020 and became the best-selling album of that year in the US. He kept the streak going with No. 1 albums It's Only Me in 2022 and WHAM in 2025. From Miami, the duo City Girls brought another flavor, appearing on Drake's chart-topping "In My Feelings" in 2018 and scoring their own hit with "Act Up" in 2019.

From Atlanta startup to global player

QC showcased its whole roster on the compilations Control the Streets, Volume 1 (2017) and Volume 2 (2019), and its reach widened through distribution with Capitol and later Motown. In February 2023, HYBE America, the US arm of the South Korean entertainment company behind BTS, acquired QC's parent company for $300 million, with Coach K and P staying in charge of the label.

A decade after opening its doors, Quality Control had turned Atlanta's west side into one of the most important addresses in modern music.
